Wrexham Prison: Minister says locals ‘will benefit’

Prisons Minister Jeremy Wright and Welsh Secretary David Jones have visited the site of what will be the UK’s biggest super-prison in Wrexham.

Plans for the £250m prison have received outline planning permission and it is due to open in 2017.

After visiting the site, on Wrexham’s industrial estate, the ministers met local businesses hoping to benefit from the jail.

The companies are meeting construction firms bidding to build the prison.

Work is expected to start on the 2,100-inmate jail next summer.

Jeremy Wright said he hopes local people will benefit from the 1,000 jobs the prison will bring.
